When a scribe asks which commandment is greatest, Jesus does not pick one rule from a list. He names wholehearted love for the one Lord and love for neighbor as oneself, and he treats the two as inseparable.

Jesus names love for God as the first commandment and describes it as whole-personed, with the mind included. Loving God with the mind means directing thought and attention toward him, not merely feeling warmly about him.
