Paul does not deny that godliness brings gain. He redefines gain as godliness joined to contentment, and warns that the desire to be rich is a trap that has pulled some away from the faith.

Jesus does not merely advise careful budgeting in Matthew 6:19–21. He redirects the whole life toward what cannot decay, because the heart trails whatever we treasure.
